Theoretical and practical training “Foundation and development of a public organization for parents”

In April 17-19, 2011 there was a three-day theoretical and practical training “Foundation and development of a public organization for parents” within the scope of the “Parent’s voice” project which is being realized by Chernihiv region charity Aratta with the financial support of MATRA project of Kingdom of the Netherlands Embassy in Ukraine. This training was aimed at helping the parents of visually impaired children to create a public organization which would actively support the children’s interests.

During this training the following questions were discussed: defining of the mission, main tasks, strategic directions of work and organization structure, principles of work and management. The training participants learned about the procedure of the official registration and organization work within the Ukrainian legal environment, they found out how to form partnership relations with important people and institutions and got the information how to search the funding sources for non-governmental organizations etc.

Experienced trainers – Lutsenko Tamara, director of Bilotserkivsky children health center “Chance”, cofounder of Bilotserkivsky city society for handicapped children and their parents “Ayurveda”, and Lutsenko Inna, the main specialist of the Education Department for the people with special needs of Secondary and Primary Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. These specialists are well-informed concerning this issue.

14 parents of visually impaired children, a blind mother and a mother with residual vision took part in the training. These two mothers shared their life problems and difficulties of their daily life. Besides parents from Chernihiv there were mothers from Mariupol and Slovyansk. All parents were united by common problem.

The training resulted in making common decisions concerning life and activity improvement of visually impaired children. It was also realized that this organization of the parents has to be an effective mechanism of implementing these decisions into life. In such a way parents assessed their role in improving life conditions of their children and expressed the wish to create such an organization. Common problems, communication with people holding the same views, valuable information and a successful example of the organization from Bila Tserkva united parents and inspired them for future work.
