In September 21-24, 2014 training trainers for “Choice-8” substance abuse prevention program took place in the premises of the Chernihiv Resort, “Sunrise”. This time the target audience for prevention efforts is eighth-graders of boarding schools of the Chernihiv Region. The trainees represented the boarding schools from the towns of Borzna, Horodnia, Novhorod-Siverskiy, Schors and the City of Chernihiv. They are social teachers or psychologists for the schools. The training was conducted by Valeriy Ryabukha, Chairman of the Board for the Prevention Center, “Choice”. He was assisted by Vadym Strokin, Healthy Life Style Expert and Lina Mahotkina, Pedagogical University Lecturer. The training included a theoretical part, where trainees learned prevention theories, risk and protective factors, class-room management and other themes, as well a practical part on specifics of conducting “Choice-8” sessions. Before starting the program at schools, the trainers are going to conduct pre surveys in the classes of intervention and control classes.
This project is supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education. Valeriy Ryabukha, the director of the project, was a 2009-2010 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow at Virginia Commonwealth University.
