Salutary way out for “children from the street”

Chernihiv Regional Charity “Aratta” conducted a round-table discussion about the project “Children from the Street”. The goal of this project is to prevent negative phenomena among teenagers from so-called risk groups and the socialization of these teenagers. The youth club for 13-18 year old children is intended to instil in them a feeling that they are needed, to encourage their interests and to develop their abilities.

The manager of the project Tetyana Marinaschenko announced statistics on the level of homelessness in our region. A statistic is a statistic. The real picture, however, is far worse. That is why “Aratta”, headed by Victoria Filatova, has started to solve these tricky problems: how to get children off the street, how to attract them to a useful activity, to make their spare time safe and to further the development of their personalities and attitude. The overall aim is that children from unfit families can fit into society. Psychologists, representatives of social services for youth and other state and public organizations took part in the discussion of the above questions. The Charity “British Humanitarian Aid”, which has a long-standing partnership with “Aratta”, was represented by Tony Buddel from the Great Britain.
Lena Trubenok, co-author and one of executors of the project, told the participants of the discussion: “Each child is inquisitive, interested in something, and if you can find this “golden vein”, give a child the chance to realize himself, he will become more open, more trusting, and show his creative potential”. The programme “Adept”, which includes various different activities, was set up in Aratta, so that children could find an activity that they could really get their teeth into. The aim of the programme is to develop the creative abilities of street children and to help them adapt to society.
