The dance of life By Brother Anthony …and what is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth. It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house. It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy, even as if your beloved were to eat the fruit. It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit, and to know that all the blessed dead are standing about you and watching… “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran My article of last month was entitled, “The Dance of Death”, so how fitting that this month’s article is entitled, The Dance of Life. Until the year of 1988, I wandered aimlessly through life, ignorant of the joys this wondrous spiritual pathway offered. On that auspicious day when my life changed inextricably, I emerged from the shadows of despair and ignorance to find not only absolute joy, but also those on this plane and the spiritual plane, who would guide me in the ways of love. I soon learnt that the mistakes of my early life were actually meant to be made, thus giving me the wisdom to enjoy a new life, filled with love for others. Learning from past mistakes and recognizing that I alone created those situations, which led me into misery and despair, was very important. It was like a cleansing of very being and, once accomplished, I could begin the dance of life. I have met such wonderful human beings who have joined me in this dance; my dear friend, Olya for example, who lives in the town of Nishen in the Ukraine, and who is one of my favourite dancing partners. She suffers terribly from cerebral palsy, never speaking a single word and, although now in her 30s, requires constant care. She spends her day seated in a wheelchair, her legs tied together at the knees to save her from sliding floor, and yet how we dance. Olya begins the dance with her eyes and I join her. We speak the language of love and, in its purest form, the only real language any of us ever need. Svetlana, another physically and mentally handicapped girl, dances with me and we speak to each other in our own way. Her eyes will speak or she will make a small gesture, sometimes imperceptible, and yet I recognize these small gestures and a language is born. A dance begins. I am often asked why I work with these impoverished people, and the simple answer is, I receive so much from them. When you truly give to others from your heart centre, the rewards are immeasurable. I meet so many people who have built an invisible wall around their hearts, that they are totally unable to begin the dance of life. Maybe they have been hurt in the past and the “wall” Is a protection against ever being hurt again. But unless we take down these emotional barriers, we can never begin to truly love. Freely allowing love’s vibration to permeate our entire being switches on our “heartlight”, thus drawing others to our light in the same way that moths are drawn to a candle flame. We become like usherettes in the theatre who use a torch to show people to their seats. As we draw people to us, they leave the shadows of ignorance and despair and we light the way for them. So many dear friends were there to light the way for me and now, years later, I try to light the way for others. Most of us have been hurt in the past, things happen that leave us like wounded sparrows, and yet unless we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and begin again, we have no chance of finding the true, unconditional love that awaits us. Age is no barrier to this love for the greatest love of all comes from within. To love ourselves, our true selves, and not what is reflected in the mirror, is the first dance step to learn. The love which is reflected from our hearts becomes a beacon of light for all to see, and see it they surely will. An artist may paint a beautiful picture for others to admire, but we have a greater responsibility. We become “heartists” showing love and teaching others how to begin the dance of life, for truly indeed, our spiritual pathway is a wondrous dance in which all can take part. Yes, you may have been hurt in the past, but dearest friend, take down your invisible wall, place your hand in mine and, as the sun rises in the east and birds begin their dawn chorus, let us dance together. The month of March is now upon us, a time of Spring’s awakening, so let that same energy flow through you. As the first rays of the morning sum melt the frost covered dew, let it also melt our hearts. Let everything we do be done with love’s calling unto its self. Let every person we meet feel love flowing from our entire being and, as we shower the world with that love, then so shall we be showered. Let the dance begin. May God Bless you all
